In the historical and mystical practice of alchemy, elements are not the isolated atoms found on our modern periodic table, but rather fundamental cosmic forces and physical principles that alchemists believed composed all matter in the universe. An alchemist’s understanding of elements evolved across three core frameworks: the Four Classical Elements, the Three Primes, and the Seven Planetary Metals. The Four Classical Elements

Adopted from ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle, medieval alchemists used these four foundational building blocks to map out physical and spiritual properties:

🔥 Fire (Ignis): Represented by an upright triangle, it symbolizes warmth, dry heat, emotion, and the upward drive toward transformation.

💨 Air (Aer): Symbolized by an upright triangle with a horizontal line through it, representing life force, wet heat, and the intellect.

💧 Water (Aqua): Represented by an inverted triangle, mirroring a downward flow; it stands for cold moisture, intuition, and purification.

🌱 Earth (Terra): Symbolized by an inverted triangle with a horizontal line, representing cold dryness, grounding, physical senses, and structure.

Many traditions added a fifth element, Quintessence or Aether, representing the spiritual void, cosmic balance, and the thread that binds the other four together. The Tria Prima (The Three Primes)

Popularized by the Swiss physician and alchemist Paracelsus, the Tria Prima represents the primary catalysts or internal “ingredients” required to transmute physical matter:
